The TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION seeks to improve its PRE CRASH SAFETY SYSTEM by equipping it with an Eye Monitor. The Eye monitor will determine whether the drivers’ eyes are properly open while driving. This feature is expected to work with the current system’s capability to determine the direction of the driver’s face. With this, TOYOTA aims to reduce collision-related damages. The eye monitor feature works like this: a monitoring camera is focused on the driver and is connected to an image-processing computer to determine the position of the driver’s upper and lower eyelids.

When the Pre-Crash System senses an imminent collision and that the driver’s eye behavior becomes irregular (e.g. droopiness, closed eyes etc) or when he is not facing the right direction, it immediately warns the driver of the impending accident. This feature is expected to be included in the upcoming TOYOTA models.
